La velocità di download e le sue unità di misura

Accade spesso di confondere sigle e termini che sembrano simili tra loro. Nel mondo delle telecomunicazioni, in particolare, si tende spesso a usare come sinonimi i termini megabit e megabyte, mbps (Mb/s o Mega/s) e MB/s (o Megabyte/s). In realtà megabit e megabyte sono unità di misura molto diverse tra loro.

Megabit è il termine usato nelle offerte internet per linea fissa e sta a indicare la velocità massima di trasferimento dei dati che ha una determinata connessione. In altre parole, rappresenta la massima velocità di download che una connessione internet può raggiungere a seconda della tecnologia utilizzata.

Si può parlare quindi, per esempio, di:

• ADSL a 20 megabit al secondo (Mega/s o mbps): in un secondo vengono trasferiti al massimo 20 megabit;
• Fibra ottica FTTC a 100 o 200 megabit al secondo (Mega/s o mbps): in un secondo, vengono trasferiti al massimo 100 o 200 megabit in base al tipo di tecnologia usata dall’operatore;
• Fibra ottica FTTH a 1 gigabit al secondo (Giga/s): in un secondo vengono trasferiti al massimo 1000 megabit.

Attualmente la massima velocità di download che una connessione internet domestica può raggiungere equivale a 1 gigabit (1000 megabit). Questa quantità di dati, tuttavia, corrisponde soltanto alla capacità massima della rete, non alla effettiva velocità di download che si può ottenere. La velocità effettiva di download, ovvero, la massima velocità che può raggiungere una connessione internet, infatti, è influenzata da fattori diversi tra i quali:

• la distanza dall’armadio Telecom della fibra;
• il livello di sovraccarico della rete;
• l’essere collegati al modem/router via cavo o via wi-fi;
• ecc.

Cosa vuol dire megabit o Mbps, quindi?

Il megabit è un multiplo del bit: corrisponde, in particolare, a 1 milione di bit. Una connessione in fibra ottica FTTC da 200 megabit/s, quindi, ha una capacità di trasmissione massima dei dati pari a 200 milioni di bit al secondo. La fibra ottica FTTH da 1 gigabit/s, invece, permette in un solo secondo il trasferimento di 1 miliardo di bit (o di 1000 megabit).

Un byte, invece, equivale a 8 bit.

Come si traduce tutto ciò in termini pratici? È semplice.

Prendiamo in esempio una connessione in fibra ottica FTTH che può raggiungere la velocità massima di download di 1 gigabit/s (o 1000 megabit/s). Se volessimo scaricare, per esempio, un film in HD da 2 GB (gigabyte) riusciremmo a farlo in circa 16 secondi. Infatti:

 2GB corrispondono a 16.000 Megabit (bisogna moltiplicare per 8000)

16.000/1.000 (la quantità di megabit massima che si può scaricare in 1 secondo)= 16 secondi

Un altro semplice esempio. Lo stesso film in HD da 2 GB, con una connessione in fibra FTTC in grado di raggiungere la velocità di download massima di 200 megabit/s, verrebbe scaricato in circa 80 secondi. Infatti:

 16.000/200 (la quantità di megabit massima che si può scaricare in 1 secondo)= 80 secondi.

300 megabit sono tanti? Forse anche tu ti sarai posto domande simili a questa. Se si parla di 300 megabit/s, di certo non sono pochi. È molto probabile che si tratti della velocità di download messa a disposizione da una fibra ottica ibrida FTTC particolarmente avanzata. È una velocità certamente molto inferiore a quella massima che può raggiungere la fibra FTTH (1 gigabit/s) ma è comunque ottima da avere a casa perché è adatta allo streaming in alta definizione e al gaming online.

Megabit e megabyte – Mbps e MB: la differenza

Sebbene entrambi in ambito aritmetico facciano parte della stessa scala, la scala del byte, in quello delle telecomunicazioni, come abbiamo visto, megabit e magabyte sono due unità di misura completamente diverse. Come indicato nei paragrafi precedenti, il megabit è una delle unità di misura del trasferimento dei dati o della velocità di download. Il megabyte e i suoi multipli, invece, sono usati per indicare la quantità di dati scaricati.

Questi ultimi vengono spesso usati, inoltre, anche per indicare la quantità di dati (o di informazioni) che un dispositivo può riuscire a contenere. Ne sono classici esempi, le chiavette USB o gli hard disk esterni. Sapevi, per esempio che oggi esistono hard-disk esterni n grado di immagazzinare fino a 1 EB (exabyte) di dati? È una quantità davvero enorme considerando che a un exabyte corrispondono 1 miliardo di gigabyte. Giusto per rendere l’idea, un hard-disk del genere potrebbe arrivare a contenere fino a circa 500.000.000 di film in HD da 2 GB ognuno.

Offerte internet fisso e mobile: il mondo dei gigabit (Gb) e dei gigabyte (GB)

Quando si fa il confronto delle offerte internet fisso e mobile è facile confondersi. Vengono usate, infatti, entrambe le unità di misura spesso sintetizzate nel termine “Giga”. In realtà, però:

• nelle offerte internet fisso, i termini Giga/s e/o Mega/s corrispondono alla velocità massima di download che la connessione può raggiungere e devono essere pertanto intesi come gigabit al secondo o megabit al secondo;
• nelle offerte mobile la situazione cambia. Gli stessi termini (Giga e/o Mega) indicano invece la quantità massima di dati che è possibile scaricare e, pertanto, devono essere intesi come Gigabyte (GB) e/o Megabyte (MB).

Mbps, mb/s, MB/s: come si abbreviano?

Ora che abbiamo chiarito la differenza tra megabit e megabyte, vediamo come si abbreviano nel modo corretto, usando come riferimento la scala del byte.

Le diciture Mbps e mb/s sono entrambe corrette se fanno riferimento ai megabit al secondo (megabit/s), ovvero alla velocità di download. Non è corretto, invece, dire MBps e MB/s (megabyte/s): queste sigle, infatti, si riferiscono sempre alla quantità di dati che è possibile trasmettere in un determinato lasso di tempo e l’unità di misura di riferimento per il trasferimento dei dati è il megabit non il megabyte.

Come risparmiare megabyte?

Trattandosi sempre di offerte a consumo, le promozioni mobile mettono a disposizione una quantità ben definita di dati, espressa in GB o MB, da usare in abbinamento ad altri servizi quali, per esempio, i minuti o gli SMS gratuiti. La quantità di Giga delle singole offerte varia sia in base all’operatore che si è scelto, sia al costo mensile. A differenza di quanto accade per la linea fissa, i GB delle offerte mobile tendono a consumarsi man mano che si usano le app mobile o che si naviga su internet dallo smartphone. Condividere la propria connessione mobile tramite hotspot o tethering oppure guardare film su piattaforme come Netflix o Infinity o video su Youtube, sono alcune delle attività che consumano più dati mobile. Quando se ne hanno pochi a disposizione al mese, riuscire a risparmiarli diventa molto importante.

50 GB sono tanti o pochi?Se ti stai chiedendo quanti GB debba avere una buona offerta mobile, non c’è una risposta valida sempre. Tutto dipende dall’uso che se ne fa. Possiamo però provare a fare una piccola stima. Prendiamo sempre come riferimento il nostro film in HD da 2 GB: guardarlo da mobile determinerebbe un consumo di dati pari, appunto a 2 GB. Una connessione mobile da 50 GB/mese ti permetterebbe di guardare circa 15 film in streaming in alta definizione al mese tramite mobile.

Come risparmiare megabyte, quindi? La strategia più semplice ed efficace sta nello staccare la connessione dati quando si è coperti da una rete wifi. Se si è a casa e si possiede una connessione internet, per esempio, l’ideale è usare questa per navigare anche da mobile e risparmiare i Giga della propria offerta mobile. Basta attivare il wifi sullo smartphone e individuare l’SSID (il nome) della rete domestica tra quelli presenti nella lista. Si potrebbe decidere anche di staccare la connessione dati del cellulare tutte quelle volte in cui non lo si usa: di notte, per esempio, quando si va a riposare.

È importante riuscire a risparmiare megabyte soprattutto quando si è all’estero. L’entrata in vigore del roaming gratuito in Europa, infatti, permette di continuare a usare la propria offerta mobile anche quando si viaggia in uno dei paesi UE ma la quantità di GB o MB che si ha a disposizione è molto limitata. In questo caso l’ideale è usare il wifi ogni volta che se ne ha la possibilità agganciandosi, se possibile a una VPN (Virtual Private Network) o, nel caso in cui non lo fosse, al wifi dell’hotel in cui si soggiorna, prendendo le opportune accortezze.

Cosa significa 30 GB di traffico internet? “30 GB di traffico internet” è una delle classiche descrizioni che si trovano nelle offerte mobile. A seconda dell’operatore e dell’offerta scelta, il numero posto davanti l’abbreviazione GB può aumentare o diminuire. La frase sta a indicare la soglia complessiva di traffico dati, espressa in GB, che l’offerta mette a disposizione ogni mese. In alcune offerte viene specificata anche il tipo di rete, per esempio: 30 GB in 4G o, a seconda dei casi, in 4,5G o 5G. In questo caso i termini 4G, 4,5G e 5G (rispettivamente 4th – Generation, 4,5th – Generation e 5th – Generation) stanno a indicare il tipo di rete mobile che l’operatore mette a disposizione per quella determinata offerta. Tra quelle indicate, la rete più avanzata e dotata di una più elevata velocità di download è la 5G (la velocità di download che riesce ad assicurare si avvicina molto a quella della fibra FTTH).

Se nonostante le accortezze del caso ti sei reso conto che i GB della tua offerta mobile non sono più sufficienti, la soluzione migliore è cambiare operatore e attivare una nuova offerta. Next to price, internet speed is one of the main decision drivers when shopping for internet plans or evaluating your current internet service. But, unlike price – where you can easily look at the monthly cost and say “that fits my budget” or “that’s a new car payment” – internet speeds can be a bit trickier to gauge.

Is 100 Mbps “fast” internet? Is 10 Mbps “slow”? What internet speeds do I get? These are all questions many of us ask, so we’ve created this simple guide to explain them.

Let’s look at how internet speed is measured, what is considered fast internet, what may be slow internet and other factors to help you answer the question: What is a good internet speed?

How is internet speed measured?

Internet speed is determined by how much data the connection can download (download speeds) or upload (upload speeds) per second.

In both cases, the speed is shown as bits per second (bps). Since an internet connection transfers thousands of bits per second, we use the prefixes k, M and G to show how many thousands of bits we’re talking about. If you’re familiar with the metric system, you know “k” = 1,000, “M” = 1,000k (1,000,000) and “G” = 1,000M (1,000,000,000).

When researching internet speeds, you’ll likely see Mbps more than kbps or Gbps. That’s because Mbps speeds are better suited to what we use the internet for.

When are download speeds important?

For most households, having fast download speeds is most important. That’s what we use for common activities such as streaming TV, downloading music and browsing social media.

When are upload speeds important?

Upload speeds come into play with things like video conferencing and uploading large files to a server or cloud. Check out this blog for more information about download vs. upload internet speeds.

Speeds that fall into the kbps range are generally what we’d call “slow” internet and Gbps speeds, which are less prevalent but becoming more common, are in the ultra-fast range.

What is a good internet speed?

A good internet speed is at or above 25 Mbps. These speeds will support most online activity, such as HD streaming, online gaming, web browsing and downloading music.

Fast internet speeds, those in the 100+ Mbps range, are often better, especially if you want your internet plan to support multiple devices and users at once.

Think of “broadband” as the national internet speed limit

Per the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a broadband internet connection has a minimum download speed of 25 Mbps and a minimum upload speed of 3 Mbps. This gives us a baseline for determining fast and slow internet speeds.

Speeds much faster than a standard broadband connection are generally considered “fast” internet. While all speeds below that threshold aren’t necessarily slow, they are too slow to be considered broadband internet.

Keep in mind there are many things that can affect actual internet speeds and performance. Adding connected devices and using the internet for demanding tasks such as streaming in 4K or downloading an HD movie can hinder performance and make even “fast” speeds seem slow.

What is considered fast internet?

Internet download speeds of 100 Mbps or higher are often considered fast internet because they can handle multiple online activities for multiple users at once without major interruptions in service. If you need a little help determining the best internet speeds for your needs, we’ve got you covered.

Common fast internet speed tiers include:

• 100 Mbps
• 200 Mbps
• 250 Mbps
• 300 Mbps

• 400 Mbps
• 500 Mbps
• 1,000 Mbps
• 2,000 Mbps

Cable internet and fiber-optic internet services are your best bets for fast internet speeds. Fiber-optic internet is also a great choice for speed consistency, as it is less vulnerable than cable to slower speeds during peak usage times.

Popular cable or fiber-optic internet providers include AT&T, CenturyLink, Cox, Frontier FiberOptic, Optimum, Spectrum, Suddenlink, Verizon Fios, Xfinity and Windstream. Many of these providers offer speeds up to 940-1,000 Mbps in select areas, but Xfinity is currently the only provider with speeds up to 2,000 Mbps.

What are fast internet upload speeds?

Upload speeds of 10 Mbps or higher are generally considered fast internet speeds for upload because they can easily handle the common activities of the average user. For example, Skype recommends upload speeds of 1.2 Mbps or higher for HD video calling. Uploading a large file, like 700MB file document, should take less than 10 minutes with a 10 Mbps upload connection.

What is considered slow internet?

Download speeds less than 25 Mbps are too slow to be considered broadband or good home Wi-Fi. With these speeds, users may experience buffering when streaming video, difficulty connecting multiple devices and other internet connectivity issues.

The FCC does recommend speeds less than 25 Mbps for many online activities, including streaming SD and HD video, gaming online and downloading music. However, these are minimum speed recommendations and do not account for connecting multiple devices or other factors that may slow your internet speeds.

What types of internet connections are more likely to be slower?

• Dial-up

  Regardless of the internet activity, dial-up is considered slow internet because it can only offer speeds up to 56 kbps. These speeds aren’t capable of much more than checking email and will not support streaming, online gaming, Wi-Fi or even uploading a single webpage in a reasonable amount of time.

• DSL

  DSL is the most common internet service type with speeds lower than 25 Mbps. Some cable internet services offer slow speeds as a low-cost internet option but are often capable of providing much higher speeds for a higher monthly cost.

• Fixed wireless

  Fixed wireless is a popular internet solution in rural areas. It uses broadcast towers to transmit and receive internet signals. Depending on provider and location, speeds can vary between 3-100 Mbps, but tend to be on the slower end.

Think your internet is slow? Take a speed test

An internet speed test will give you a good idea of whether or not you have the necessary speeds for your household. For best results, take the speed test with a wired connection. If you get speeds below 25 Mbps, you may have a slow internet connection that can’t keep up with all your online activity.

Pro Tip: For best results, use an Ethernet cord to connect your router or modem directly to your device before you run the test.

If you have slow internet, there may be other internet providers in your area that offer faster speeds. Or, your current internet provider may offer plans with higher speeds. Shop around to find a faster internet speed if your current provider and plan doesn’t offer the speeds you need.

How much of a difference does a good internet speed make?

Small speed increments, such as 15 to 25 Mbps, likely won’t result in a noticeable difference in performance, but larger jumps, say 10 to 100 Mbps, can give you a totally different experience.

To give you an idea of how much speed can play a role in downloading and uploading, we’ve listed the estimated time it would take to download a two-hour HD movie and upload a 10-minute video with various speeds below.

How long does it take to download a movie?

File sizes for things like music, movies and pictures vary, but a movie can range from 1 to 7GBs depending on the length and picture quality. Here’s how long it would take in hours:minutes:seconds to download a 4GB file at various speeds.

How long does it take to upload a short video?

Video files vary in size, but let’s say you have a 500 MB clip, which could amount to 10 minutes or more in standard definition. Here’s an estimate of how long it would take to upload it with various upload speeds.

Keep in mind, upload speeds from internet providers are often significantly lower than download speeds. Some fiber-optic providers, however, do offer upload speeds comparable to their advertised download speeds.

These download and upload times are estimates, based on a constant speed. As mentioned above, there are many factors, such as the number of connected devices and types of internet activities performed, that can affect internet speeds and the time it takes to perform a given task.
