Hey it’s Paul Gruber with Pronunciation Workshop. In this video I’m going to show you the Disappearing ‘Z’ sound. It’s important that you know about this so that you can speak English smoothly and correctly. Join me and I’ll meet you on the other side. The goal for all my students is to speak English as perfectly as possible. Now at times the smallest change that you can make in your speech has the greatest impact on how you sound. Here’s an example of that. You may not know this, but there are many times in English when a word is spelled with an S but we pronounce that S as a Z. Here are four examples. Even though these four words are spelled with an S at the end, we pronounce that S as a voiced Z. Birds, spelled with an S, pronounced as a Z. Birds. Eyes, same thing, spelled with an S, pronounced as a Z. Eyes. His, believe it or not, that S is pronounced as a Z. His. Buses, that final S is pronounced as a Z. Buses. Can you think of any other words where we do this? Where the S is pronounced as a Z? If so, let’s make a list. Comment down below and show me some of the words you come up with. When you get this right I guarantee it will elevate your English to a whole new level. Now why do we turn an S into a Z, and when do we do this? Well I fully explain this to you in my online video training course. I’ll put the link below if you’d like to jump start your English and sign up. I make everything easy and simple for you; so you learn to do this automatically. However today I’m going to show you what to do when you have words ending with a Z sound and then the following word begins with an S. You’ll see that when we connect these two words together, all you pronounce is one clean S sound. That’s all you do. You’ll sound fluent and this is gonna be quite simple. Let’s start with this word and put it at the end of a sentence. Birds, I like birds. Notice the S is pronounced as a Z. Birds, it’s voiced. Now put that same word in this sentence where the words birds is followed with a word which begins with an S. And it becomes, I hear birds sing. I hear birds sing. Those two S’s become just one S. Birds sing, and you’ll notice that the Z sound completely disappears. Also you don’t wanna break up those words birds, sing, keep it smooth and connected. I hear birds sing. Let’s look at this word, eyes. She has blue eyes. Notice the last sound is a voiced Z. Eyes. But now let’s look at this sentence. Her eyes squint. Squint is when you squeeze your eyes, like if the sun is in your eyes or you’re trying to see something. Now squint begins with an S, so in this sentence, her eyes squint, the two S’s become just one sound. Her eyes squint. His, even though this word is spelled with an S it’s pronounced as a Z. His, that car is his. His. However, when we put that word in this sentence, it becomes a connected S. His seat, connect the two S’s. He sat in his seat. Let’s look at this word, buses. Buses, I see two buses. It’s a voiced Z. But in this sentence that Z sound, becomes an S. The buses seem to be running late. The buses seem to be running late. Let’s look at these additional words. These, this word ends with a z sound. These. But in this sentence the Z becomes an S. These scissors are sharp. These scissors, these scissors are sharp. This word ends with a Z sound, monkeys. But the Z becomes an S. The monkeys swing in the tree. This word ends with a voiced Z, says, She says, but in this sentence it turns into an S. She says something. You see there’s a disappearing Z. She says something.
