A few weeks ago I made my mother, already very weak, hear that song, because we kept hearing it together in my youth 40 years ago. She was so touched that she began to cry.

In an interview with Terry Gross of National Public Radio (NPR), Paul Simon explained how he wrote the song while working at his first job in music:
